Crunchy Mama Stuff

I'm six weeks away from giving birth (hopefully) and time seems to be moving at a snail's pace. I want to be at the finish line already. I've gotten everything in order.

  • Birthing supplies have all been procured (Zion got a kick out of the fact that Mama has diapers "to wear while she's healing").

  • We found a local Naturopathic Doctor

  • Our midwifery fees are all paid off

  • All the necessary paperwork for paid maternity leave has been submitted (I'll be off from work from April to mid August)

  • Baby's clothes/blankets/bibs/etc. are all washed, separated by size and nicely organized into the one small dresser we're dedicating to baby stuff

  • We got this interesting [probably too big] new stroller that will fit both baby and toddler, and that's all put together

  • Crib is all set up and I even have a diaper bag packed

  • Lyss is setting up my labor playlist and Lion is figuring out the hose to sink connection for filling the birth pool

So we're good. Just waiting.

And while we wait, one of the things that I get most excited about is...diapers! Yes, diapers. I've committed to cloth diapering this go round and I'm so eager to get started. I've been researching wash techniques, how to properly size/snap them, which materials are easiest to use/environmentally responsible. All that good stuff.

(Here's a peek at our diaper stash; everything purchased from Black/Brown Mom-owned companies)

Why? Well first, because disposables are terrible for the environment. They take decades to decompose and that just feels so wrong for me these days. Also, we no longer live in a city apartment with a shared laundry, so using/washing them won't be a hassle (I hope). Then there's the money factor. While building our diaper stash of 24 diapers + inserts + cloth wipes + wet bags + dry pails + the hand spray setup was a notable upfront expense (about $400), the comparison to the cost of disposables is a no-brainer (with Zion we used about (2) 24 packs a week that were ~$11 each, plus about $20/month on wipes. So figure something around $1,400/year). It's funny how as I become more financially secure, I also become more financially aware and "responsible".

(Yes, cloth wipes too. Yes, I have them folded in a way that will allow them to pop-up for use in the wipe warmer that we kept from Chapo's baby days)

Soooo yeah. I guess you could say I've reached high level crunchy mom status. What an honor!

Life As We Know It... FUCKING SUCKS

That's a harsh reality that I fully accepted last night. It may sound dark or daunting, but it is the absolute truth. And as they...
